NZ Pug Rescue

Questionaire

The Pug breed has become very popular, it is one of the “in” breeds to have and we get several enquiries every week from people wanting to buy a puppy. From October to December (leading up to Xmas), we can get 6 or more enquiries each day.

Whilst Pugs are delightful little dogs, there are many aspects to owning a Pug that make them not the dog for everyone.

What made you decide on a Pug?

Would you prefer a male or female, fawn or black, and what is the reason behind your preferred choice?

Are you wanting a Pug purely as a pet, or are you interested in showing, or breeding?

What are your thoughts on spaying and neutering?

How many hours a day do you anticipate that a Pug would be left on its own?

Do you want a companion dog to share your home 24 hours a day, or would you need to leave a dog outside in a backyard for periods of time?

Does anyone in your home suffer from asthma or allergies?

Are you aware of the number of health problems that Pugs can have, and are you able & willing to manage any of these?  Are you aware of the need for all Pugs to be eye tested at 12 months of age, by a specialist ophthalmologist vet, and that many Pugs will require surgery and/or daily medication for life to prevent loss of vision as they age? Are you able to manage the cost of this and have the time to devote to follow up treatment that may be required? e.g. surgery alone could be in excess of $600 & you probably have an 80% chance of getting a Pug which has an eye problem.

Pugs snort, snuffle, snore and sneeze. Would anyone in your home find it hard to live with this?

Is your home owned or rented? If rented, do you have written permission to keep a dog in the house?

Is the fencing very secure, with gates and fences low enough that a small dog cannot crawl under, and gates that cannot be accidentally left open by visitors?

What would you do with a Pug when you go away on holiday?

Do you have any children in the home? If yes, what age/s?

Do you have any other pets?  If yes, can you please describe them.

Are you prepared to wait for up to 2 years before you get a puppy from a reputable breeder? It may take this long.
